Preben hansen and trying to picture churchill In 1955 the Danish Architect Preben Hansen used a "Cut and Paste" creative approach to try and visualize the bust of Winston Churchill on a plinth in Copenhagen. There were no computers with illustrative software in those days. One did what one could to try and imagine how things would look. Here is picture of one of his ideas.

owners of churchill park - green lightThe year long debate on where and how to build the Churchill Path of Destiny Memorial at Churchill Park has taken a big step forward.
The question on whether the bust should be relocated to another part of the park rather than remain in its current location appears to be resolved. The plan going forward will be to enhance the current footpath with a hard surface and path stones containing Churchill quotations. This will be viewed as a general enhancement of the area with hope it attracts more foot traffic towards the Churchill bust. As part of the enhancement the bust of Churchill will be restored. It is now hoped that approval can be received from the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces before final political approval from Copenhagen City Council. More information will be supplied during the planning application process. Thanks are given to the Danish Ministry of Defense and its estates department. End note - An application has been submitted to the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture. around the globeA tribute to Lord Cormack who died 25 February 2024.
"I first met Lord Cormack when he sat as a Member of Parliament in 1991. He had arranged an evening for Churchill Fellows at the Houses of Parliament in London. The evening consisted of a guided tour around the House of Commons and the House of Lords. A new room had been opened for the event and named the Churchill room. It displayed a number of Churchill´s paintings and created quite a reflective atmosphere. The dinner and speeches all embraced the spirit of Churchill with humour and anecdotes. Lord Cormack continued to arrange the event annually and I stayed in touch with him during the years afterwards. " "The Churchill Path of Destiny was very appreciative of his involvement and the role he played in encouraging other notable persons to select their favourite Churchill quotations for the project in Denmark. His support was very welcome and enlightening." Other news. New Zealand and Italy have both been approached to see if they would be interested in supplying stone for the Path of Destiny. The A. P Møller Fund in Denmark has been unable to provide financial support for the project. However, as a neighbour to Churchill Park they see no reason why there should be any objection, from themselves, for the project to go forward during the planning committee phase with the governmental authorities. Contact with various foundations and international philanthropists is ongoing. speech by professor carsten høeg at the unveiling of the bust of winston churchill in frederiksberg, denmarkThe speech by Professor Carsten Høeg on 4th May 1955. It is highly unlikely that Carsten Høeg knew the exact details of the letter to the British Prime Minister "Vincent Churchill". The ´55 event in both communications referred to ´45.
hamburg - ribbentrop 1945During the arrest of Joachim von Ribbentrop in Hamburg 1945 a letter was produced. The letter was addressed to the British Prime Minister "Vincent" Churchill. At the time the error in addressing "Winston Churchill" correctly was dismissed and explained through Ribbentrop suffering from confusion and delusion. Nevertheless, the Allies were desperate to know more about the mindset of Adolf Hitler during the final days of the war and it is unknown if the letter had any deeper meaning other than what was written down.
Here is a chance to examine the letter in full and decide for yourself if there was any other meaning to the message. churchill quotation from the champagne familyThe 2005 Churchill quotation selected by the Pol Roger family for the Churchill Path of Destiny was:

One of the persons whom also lived in Olga´s house was called Parslev. His full name and initials were E. V. C. F Parslev. He was an artist linked to the Royal Academy of Art at Charlottenlund Palace. His paintings included self portraits, portrait of his mother and landscapes. He also painted a glacier in Greenland as well as the interior of Hvidovre church. Later in life he moved to Farum and painted his home "Villa Alf." In 1955 he made a painting of Hornbæk Strand (beach). He was born 8 March 1891 and died 30 January 1977, obituary Politiken 1 February 1977. A place to be seenThis 1955 detailed drawing by Preben Hansen was the first choice for the location of Churchill in Frederiksberg and once the 4th of May kollegium had been chosen. There is no information currently available to reveal which person had given Hansen the exact instructions to imagine the bust in that location. He did however have connections with København University due to his role as a lecturer and an extraordinary professor in 1955. This role would have possibly brought him into contact with Professor Carsten Høeg who had a close relationship to the 4th of May kollegium in Frederiksberg.

draft Plan sets out thinking for churchill path of destiny (Memorial)
Recent observations of crowd movement in 2022 at the bust of Winston Churchill in Copenhagen have seen the need to create a hard surface directly in front of the bronze bust or alternatively relocate it away from its current location. This idea is one of many currently being explored.
The famous Churchill quotation; "In War - Resolution, In Defeat - Defiance, In Victory - Magnanimity and In Peace - Goodwill" will be inscribed in the stone and become a main feature to the attraction. The Churchill quotations selected by leaders who supported the project in 2005 will be placed in a path going towards Churchill. International consultations start in 2023 and will listen to all opinions as well as the feedback on social media channels. One of the goals will be to increase the flow of people and raise the level of interest in the bronze monument and the quotations wherever it is finally located. |
