overview plan for unveiling of the churchill bust On 20 April 1955 a plan was created for the positioning of people, flags and landscaping for the 4th May event to unveil the bust of Churchill in Denmark. The "red" cross shows the first location where Churchill was proposed to be placed at the side of the kollegium. His line of view, on a map, would have been across land which would have been Number 15 and a large house with apartments, belonging to a lady called Olga and towards Bredegade 89a and the earlier home of Adolf and Anna. Nevertheless and for some unknown reason this location was rejected even though the public could have had unhindered access to view the bust. The final location in Frederiksberg was 50 meters away and is shown by the "blue" cross. At this location Churchill is placed in a more secluded position but a far more impressive area for a grand unveiling with the many guests. There is no information available to show a third position was considered directly in front of Hassagers kollegium, Bredegade, where the Churchill bust could have been placed, see "Yellow" cross. This would have allowed free access for the public and also a much larger area for a grand opening with all the guests and VIP´s on the actual day. Why this idea was not considered is unknown. It is also unknown if there was a rush to create a line of thought that would ultimately be rejected for a variety of reasons which would result in the actual "blue" cross location being chosen. Perhaps, there was a thinking within the planners minds that Churchill would be moved very quickly after the grand event but this never happened. It should be noted that the 4th of May kollegium is also home to a number of student rooms called "Hassagers collegium". There is also another number of self contained apartments next door to the 4th of May kollegium at Bredegade 13a called Hassagers kollegium. For all intent and purposes they are all linked to the 4th of May kollegium inclusive of the difference in how they are spelt!

the architect´s 1955 idea for churchill In March and April 1955 the Danish architect Preben Hansen was asked to come up with ideas for the design of the plinth on which the bronze bust of Winston Churchill would stand. The sketch shows the thinking of having a large "V" carved into the plinth representing "Victory". This design was not used and the committee instead selected a more simple design made out of Bornholm granite from Rønne.

The disappointed, would prefer to have his bust placed on Copenhagen City square where he experienced one of the greatest moments of his life during the past four or five years. There is a strong feeling (motivation) that the Churchill bust should not be hidden near a duck footpath. President Roosevelt got his statue in Copenhagen. It is located on Saint Annes square where the masses of people can view him but to hide Churchill in a corner of Copenhagen? The case of Churchill´s bust is followed with great interest in England. Other countries have copied Denmarks lead and also built Churchill statues to remember his achievement. But Denmark was the first and it would therefore be unreasonable to hide the bust for more years. The committee (Danish Churchill organising committee) has a whole month to change its first decision on the bust placement. Many people share the hope that Churchill will be moved close to the English church and in a place where hundreds of thousands of people can admire it. That Churchill himself will be happy if he learns that his bust will not be hidden “four” more years, can be considered a fact! More over the sculptor, who is a master in his art, will come to Copenhagen in a few days and you can count on him to also vote for his work to be placed in an area where there will be a higher volume of visitors rather than the Freedom college where only a few have the opportunity to admire the old statesman. |

draft Plan sets out thinking for churchill path of destiny (Memorial)
Recent observations of crowd movement in 2022 at the bust of Winston Churchill in Copenhagen have seen the need to create a hard surface directly in front of the bronze bust or alternatively relocate it away from its current location. This idea is one of many currently being explored.
The famous Churchill quotation; "In War - Resolution, In Defeat - Defiance, In Victory - Magnanimity and In Peace - Goodwill" will be inscribed in the stone and become a main feature to the attraction. The Churchill quotations selected by leaders who supported the project in 2005 will be placed in a path going towards Churchill. International consultations start in 2023 and will listen to all opinions as well as the feedback on social media channels. One of the goals will be to increase the flow of people and raise the level of interest in the bronze monument and the quotations wherever it is finally located. |
